Job Description

Telsmith, Inc. a worldwide leader, ISO certified, high quality manufacturer of crushing equipment for the quarry and mining industries has an excellent opportunity for an experienced and qualified Machine Shop Supervisor on second shift. Union experience is required.


The Machine Shop Foreman requires the ability to plan, lead, and direct skilled production machining operations on large and smaller castings, forgings, and weldments as components for heavy crushing equipment.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Steward of safety to ensure a safe working environment that drives and sustains safety in all aspects of the machine shop with a goal of zero recordable injuries.
  • Leader that brings a holistic management approach to the department with strong communications skills to support knowledge transfer between shifts.
  • Supervises assignment, organization and timely completions of machine shop floor activities for a crew up to twenty employees.
  • Work with Production Control to manage production flow to achieve on time delivery to both internal and external customers.
  • Is present on the floor at the start and end of each shift, and a minimum of 90% throughout the day.
  • Ensures adherence of union contact, company policies, code of conduct, regulations and reporting requirements relating to health, safety, training and operation procedures.
  • Oversees operations of CNC controlled boring bars, boring mills, machining centers, lathes and mills and specialized equipment.
  • Conducts regularly scheduled team meetings, training, and Toolbox Talk safety meetings.
  • Approves employee records for time and labor on a daily basis.
  • Generating supporting documentation which includes, but is not limited to: work orders, blueprints, and dimensional inspection reports.
  • Monitors overtime scheduling and equalization requirements.
  • Partners with the maintenance department to identify and resolve equipment maintenance issues.
  • Partners with programmers to identify CNC programming issues and requirement changes.
  • Participates in special projects as assigned.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to read drawing and blueprints.
  • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Office products.
  • Microsoft Dynamics AX software experience is a plus.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Responsibilities include: interviewing, planning/assigning/directing work, appraising performance, addressing complaints, administering the union contract and resolving problems with corrective action.

Education and/or Experience

2-year Associate's degree in a manufacturing-related field, or a minimum of 5 years' experience in heavy machining is required. Candidate must also have 3-5 years managerial experience or demonstrate the ability to manage personnel. Must be able to work as a team member. Strong organizational and analytical skills are required. Able to solve problems on a strategic and functional level.

Position requires leadership and communication skills acquired through education or previous experience and process familiarity gained by working in heavy fabrication. 5+ years large Manufacturing Supervision experience required. Must be capable of managing people and complex production operations in a fast paced, technical, and unionized environment. Must be familiar with Lean Manufacturing Principles and ISO standards.
